The majority of UAE’s regions woke up to the worst rainfall ever recorded after the 1949 event. This happened on the 16th of April 2024 and it lasted for a few days leaving flooded roads, buildings, airports, malls and residential houses. This weather condition is said to be associated with a larger storm traversing the Arabian Peninsula and moving across the Gulf of Oman. Authorities said that although events like this are becoming common due to human driven climate change, this so far is an exceptional event in the climate history of the UAE.

The heavy rainfall left at least 18 people in Oman killed due to flash flood and 1 in UAE’s Ras Al-Khaiman and has brought large damages to infrastructure. The total cost of damages is yet to be determined.
